Wedding Romantic Modern Color

Johanna and Melissa's Engagement and Unforgettable Wedding at Willow-Heights Mansion, San Francisco

01-30-19

Did you know that burnt sienna is one of the most striking colors you can wear in your engagement photos? We didn't either until we saw Melissa and Johanna's engagement session. Now, it's on the top of our list for how to have a striking fall engagement session.

Johanna wore an oversized chunky sweater in the hue, while Melissa wore a color-blocked coat in navy and burnt sienna. We love the way the couple's styles complemented each other and both played into the natural scenery of Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland, CA. The result was something chic, seasonal, and very much them.

We especially love the shot of them on a hill overlooking the bay. It's the epitome of epic romance. Johanna and Melissa's late afternoon shoot took advantage of the golden hour, too. Golden hour is that magic period before sunset when the light is most flattering. We love the way that their attire pulled out the fiery hues of the natural light.

For their wedding, Johanna and Melissa tied the knot at Willow-Heights Mansion. A historic home is such a wonderful location for a wedding because it can give you a sense of grandeur with the comfort of home. We can see that comfort in both Johanna and Melissa's getting ready photos. We love the light airiness of the wedding preparation photos as the couple got ready with their wedding parties.

Johanna wore a sleeveless form-fitting lace gown with a train that could have made even Kate Middleton envious. Melissa wore light pants with a white shirt, brown accessories, and as the pièce de résistance, a white textured blazer. The damask fabric mirrored the lace of Johanna's bodice, showing us that sometimes texture can have an even bigger impact than color.

They had a lovely outdoor ceremony, replete with fresh flowers. Johanna and Melissa said their vows in front of a ceremony arch that overlooked a truly spectacular view.

For some of their portraits, the couple posed in front of a large-scale sculpture of the word love. We love when you can include a piece of art that speaks to the theme of the day in the photos. And the rust color of the sculpture harkened back to the sienna of their engagement photos. Seriously, this is a couple who knows how to give us a sophisticated color story.

Johanna and Melissa celebrated with family and friends at their reception, also held at Willow-Heights Mansion. We love their gold and white embellished cake and the way it was adorned with green and white flowers around the bottom tier. A sweet and sophisticated end to a day that was very much the same.
