Both sweet and stunning, wedding cakes are an edible artform—and oh so photogenic. Here, we’ve rounded up some of our recent favs to inspire your own frosted fantasy.
In the buff
Naked cakes continue to top our list. We love their rustic simplicity. Just a thin scrape of icing reveals a hint of the base layers beneath—pretty yet not too “done” for a handmade feel.
The modern appeal of monochromatic cakes is a real head turner. An all-white cake was stunning in its simplicity with clean lines and minimal flair, like an architectural sculpture. Fabric-like folds, tone-on-tone texture and delicate sugar flowers add subtle interest.
Blitz of glitz
Flashes of gold caught our eye, from a single hand-painted layer to totally encrusted in edible sequins or party-ready in a smattering of polka dots. We saw a full spectrum of tones, from deep copper to true gold and rose gold. Major wow factor.
We dig geode cakes. Their popularity exploded throughout 2017 and we can see why. Darlings of Instagram, these epic cakes are colorful, earthy and a work of art. They cut a gorgeous, glacial look with the eye-catching illusion of glimmering rocks.
Mix is the new match
Why stick to one shape or decorating style? It’s all about the mix. Adding an element of quirk and whimsy, we saw creativity in un-uniformity, from alternating square and round layers, to elaborate decor that changed with each tier.
From striking stripes to bold blooms and architectural cityscapes, graphic cakes with strong black accents added major impact—a nice reprieve from all the whimsy.
Fruit is the new flowers. Adding a delicious take on tradition, clusters of strawberries and bunches of grapes brought ripe pops of color and fresh dimension. Add a botanical element with a few sprigs of flowers or succulents. We love this idea for a rustic-chic wedding.
