08-29-14

There's no better way to spend the long holiday weekend than with a fun DIY project! Relaxing and crafting, while crossing a task off your wedding to-do list? Sounds like perfection!

If you agree, then you're going to love today's guest feature, from none other than our friend Danielle from Wed in Milwaukee! She's offered to show us how to make one of our favorite DIY wedding decorations — a Mr. & Mrs. sign! Can't wait to hear what she has to say!

George Street How to Make a Mr. & Mrs Wedding Sign

Wedding DIY projects continue to grow in popularity, and it's doubtful that creative brides and grooms will stop anytime soon (thank you, Pinterest). One of my favorite DIY projects from my own wedding was our head table decoration — a glittery winter-inspired Mr. & Mrs. sign. It's easy to make, and you'll love seeing your do-it-yourself touches at your own wedding. Choose materials that match your color palette and get started!

Materials:

Wooden letters (from Michaels) — I used Mr. & Mrs., but you could certainly spell out your new last name!

Modge Podge

Small foam paint brush

Glitter — I used silver, but you could use any color glitter or plain spray paint, too.

Krylon clear matte finishing spray

A piece of wood to hot glue letters to (Optional)

Hot glue gun

A sparkly DIY Mr. & Mrs. wedding sign

1. Use the foam paint brush to apply a layer of Modge Podge to your wooden letters.

2. Before the Modge Podge dries, sprinkle glitter on all surfaces of each letter. It's best to do one letter at a time, so the Modge Podge doesn't dry. Tip: I used a cardboard box to set the letters into, standing upright, once they were entirely covered. Let dry.

3. Once letters are dry, touch up any spots that need it with Modge Podge and glitter.

4. Spray with finishing spray. If you purchased wooden letters that stand on their own, you're done! However, if you purchased wooden letters that need extra support, follow steps 5-7.

5. Cut a flat piece of wood the length of your letters. Since I was using a black tablecloth, I spray-painted the wood black to blend into the table.

6. Use a hot glue gun to glue each letter to the front of the wood base. Press and hold.

7. Once each letter is in place, let dry. And remember — pack your glue gun in your wedding day emergency kit, in case you have to make a last-minute fix.
